Sydney Royal Cavy Show

History

The Cavy Competitions

The cavy competitions at the show have been run continuously since the 1977 Sydney Royal Easter Show.

However, 1977 was not their first showing. Cavies made a brief appearance from 1871-1876, although they were then referred to as guinea pigs. There was only one class during this period, which was for a pair of guinea pigs.

When cavies returned in 1977, there was one class for each type, in which males or females could be entered. Types included:

  • Shiba Mina Yak
  • Peruvian
  • Wombat Peruvian & Sheltie
  • Abyssinian
  • Golden Agouti
  • English Reds
  • Himalayan
  • Creams
  • Buff
  • Blacks
  • Golden

  • Any other recognised breed
  • Baby Long Hairs & Baby Abyssinian
  • Baby Short Hairs
